Oral qualifying examinations or final oral examinations (defense of dissertation) are held in person by default with the student and all committee members physically present in the same room. If the student requests or agrees, oral qualifying examinations or final defenses may be held fully or partially remote in adherence to requirements established by the department or interdepartmental degree program (IDP). Departments or IDPs may require in-person doctoral examinations for all students, but this requirement must be voted on by faculty and published on this webpage. For further information on department and IDP-specific requirements, please see the sub-sections below.
If remote participation is being proposed, the committee chair or co-chairs must provide written confirmation of the examination format to the student ahead of the examination. The technology used for remote examinations must allow for each remote participant to see/be seen by and hear/be heard by all committee members and have access to visual materials.

One committee member can be remote without prior approval; remote participation of >1 committee member requires prior approval by the EEB Vice Chair for Graduate Education (or EEB Chair). Under extenuating circumstances where the student and/or committee chair cannot participate in person, remote examinations can be allowed; in such situations, a justification via email to the EEB Vice Chair for Graduate Education should describe the conditions justifying a remote examination.

Remote participation permitted of committee members (never the student, chair or co-chairs) with the approval of the committee chair or co-chair. Requests for the remote participation of the student or UCLA faculty require special approval from the Vice Chair or Chair if Vice Chair is the committee chair. Approval may be granted for the following reasons: health, difficulty scheduling an in-person examination, UCLA faculty or student located off campus, and financial hardship.
If the student requests it or agrees to a request from the committee chair or co-chairs, oral qualifying examinations or final oral examinations (defense of dissertation) may be held fully or partially remote with the approval of the committee chair or co-chairs.

Fully or partially remote oral qualifying examinations or final defenses may be requested for the following reasons: health, committee member or student unable to participate on campus, financial hardship, emergency.
